Freedom of the Seas vs. the Newer Ships: Does It Still Hold Up?

Inspired by an article by Calista Kiper (September 2025) — Reblogged and reimagined by Matt Maus, Travel Advisor

After sailing Freedom of the Seas in 2024, I thought it was time to compare her to the big deal ships of the day. But don't pass over this beauty and I will explain why. Let's go!

🛳️ The Ship That Once Changed Everything

When Freedom of the Seas launched in 2006, she was the world’s largest cruise ship — a true game-changer for Royal Caribbean. With 15 decks, dazzling water slides, and nearly 2,000 staterooms, she set a new standard for cruising.

Today, she’s considered “mid-sized” among Royal Caribbean’s lineup — smaller than the Oasis and Icon Class ships, but still packed with personality, fun, and charm.

🚢 First Impressions: Smaller, but Still Mighty

After sailing on megaships like Oasis of the Seas, stepping aboard Freedom feels more intimate — tighter hallways, smaller pool decks, and cozier public spaces.

But that’s not a downside. The smaller scale fosters a stronger sense of community. You’ll see familiar faces everywhere — in the elevator, by the pool, or at trivia night. Those repeat smiles and friendly nods are part of what make cruising special.

🛏️ Staterooms: Classic Comfort at Sea

While Freedom’s cabins don’t feature all the sleek modern touches of newer ships — like extra USB ports or spa-style showers — they’re clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed.

The best part? The ocean view hasn’t changed one bit. After all, what’s more luxurious than waking up to the sound of the sea and your next adventure on the horizon?

🍴 Dining: Familiar Favorites Still Shine

Dining aboard Freedom is a return to Royal Caribbean’s roots. You’ll enjoy:

  • Main Dining Room – classic service and rotating menus

  • Windjammer Café – buffet favorites with ocean views

  • El Loco Fresh – casual Mexican bites

  • Sorrento’s Pizza – late-night slices

  • Café Promenade – your go-to for coffee and snacks

While newer ships like Utopia and Icon offer expanded complimentary dining, the flavor and friendliness aboard Freedom still deliver.

🎭 Entertainment: Big Fun, Small Setting

No AquaTheater, no high-tech light shows — and you won’t even miss them. Freedom focuses on live entertainment, game shows, karaoke, ice skating, and trivia that bring cruisers together.

The ice shows are still incredible, and the smaller venues make for a more personal, interactive experience.

⚓ The Verdict: Freedom Still Delivers

While the megaships dominate the spotlight, Freedom of the Seas proves that “bigger” doesn’t always mean “better.”This ship is perfect for travelers who love a relaxed atmosphere, strong service, and a sense of community at sea.

It’s not about world records — it’s about creating your world of memories.
